Condors, volcanoes and Andean villages on a route from Arequipa

The road to Colca changes steadily. First the volcanic slopes of Arequipa appear; then come the high plains, the bofedales, the vicuñas and a passageway located about 4,900 meters above sea level. The next day, the landscape opens in front of one of the deepest canyons on the planet.

The Colca Canyon Tour 2 days and 1 night allows you to tour this area without the demands of a prolonged walk. Most of the route is made by tourist transport, with stops in viewpoints, villages and spaces of environmental interest.

With Peceros Agency Travel, you will have coordinated transportation from Arequipa, the guide and the main stops of the route. In addition, you can choose from different categories of accommodation and add an afternoon in the hot springs.

The second day concentrates one of the most anticipated moments: the arrival at the Cruz del Condor. The flight of these birds depends on the thermal currents and the conditions of the day, so it cannot be guaranteed. Even so, staying in front of the canyon during the early hours of the morning already justifies the route.

Highlights

  • Cross the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, a protected territory that preserves habitats of vicuñas, tarucas, parihuanas and queñua forests. The reserve covers sectors of Arequipa and Moquegua.
  • Observe vicuñas in freedom during the tour of the high Andean plains, always keeping distance and avoiding feeding the animals.
  • It recognizes volcanoes and surrounding mountains, such as Misti, Chachani, Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca, when visibility allows.
  • It travels through villages in the valley, where squares, churches, clothing and agricultural activities show the continuity of the collagua and Cabana communities.
  • Arrives early to the Condor Cross, when drafts may favor the displacement of the condors near the walls of the canyon.
  • Observe agricultural platforms distributed on the slopes, some of pre-Inca origin and still used by the families of the valley.
