Itinerary
Cusco – Chinchero – Maras – Moray – Urubamba – Ollantaytambo – Pisac – Cusco
Highlight of the day: A complete route through archaeological centers, production communities, agricultural terraces, textile workshops and villages of the Sacred Valley.
Pick up at the hotel
The Peceros Agency Travel team will pick you up between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., depending on the location of your accommodation.
The collection can be done directly from hotels with vehicular access within the urban area of Cusco. When the establishment is on a narrow, pedestrian or restricted street, a nearby point will be coordinated.
During the first part of the journey we will climb from Cusco to the Chinchero plateau. The morning usually feels cold and, in dry season, there may be wind. It is advisable to keep a jacket by hand and not to store it in the bottom of the backpack.
Start technical data
- Pick-up time: 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
- Transportation: Van, minivan or tourist minibus
- Approximate duration of the first transfer: 45 minutes to 1 hour
- Departure altitude: Cusco, approximately 3,399 m s. n.m.
- Recommendation: Bring a light breakfast or apply for a box breakfast in advance
- Temperature: Cold during the first few hours
Chinchero
The first stop will be Chinchero, a town located approximately 30 kilometers from Cusco. The archaeological area is linked to the old royal property of Túpac Inca Yupanqui and preserves terraces, walls, enclosures and a church built on previous basements. (Culture Cusco)
Before or after the archaeological tour we will enter a textile center managed by local families.
The artisans will show how the fiber is cleaned, how it is spun and how different shades are obtained through plants, roots, flowers, minerals and other materials used in the area. They will also explain the meaning of some designs incorporated in blankets, chucks, belts and garments.
The demonstration is dynamic and allows you to directly observe each stage. The purchase of products is voluntary and there is no obligation to purchase them.
Then we will walk through sectors of the archaeological park. The terrain combines stone, earth, stands and moderate slopes. Due to altitude, some people may feel that they breathe faster, even without intense effort.
From the high sectors you can see fields and mountains that surround the plateau.
Salineras de Maras
After Chinchero we will continue by vehicle to the Maras district.
The road descends and crosses agricultural fields, small towns and open areas. In some sections there are curves, so movement-sensitive travelers can take their precautions before leaving.
When we reach the Salineras de Maras, we will observe a set of stepped pools built on the hillside. The salt water is distributed by small channels and, when evaporated, leaves crystals that are subsequently collected, dried and classified.
The pools are linked to families from the communities of Maras and Pichingoto. Salt production maintains a direct economic value for hundreds of families in the area.
The tour is from the authorized spaces. For conservation and safety reasons, walking between the pools is not always allowed.
The color changes depending on the season, humidity, production status and incidence of light. During the dry season white and light shades predominate; in rainy months you can see darker colors.
Moray
We will continue to the Moray Archaeological Park, consisting of depressions and circular terraces built on different levels.
The guide will explain the interpretations related to agricultural use of the site, water control and thermal variations that occur between platforms.
The visit is usually done from viewpoints and marked trails. The depth of the assemblies is best appreciated when walking along their edges, where the circular shape becomes clearer.
Moray is located in an open area. During the dry months there is intense sun and wind; during the rainy season sludgh, slippery surfaces and fog may appear.
Moray, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo and Pisac are part of the Sacred Valley circuit included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket. (COSITUC – BTC CUSCO TOUR TICKET)
Transfer to Urubamba
After Moray we will begin the descent into the valley.
During the journey you will observe fields and mountains that change shape as the vehicle loses altitude. The temperature becomes more warm as we approach Urubamba.
The tour is carried out by paved road and rural sectors. Depending on the traffic, the arrival at the restaurant may vary.
Buffet lunch in Urubamba
In Urubamba we will take a lunch break in a tourist restaurant.
The buffet may include tickets, salads, soups, meats, side dishes, Peruvian dishes, desserts and vegetarian alternatives. The exact variety will depend on the restaurant assigned for the departure.
this is a day with many stops. Lunch also works as a time to sit back, hydrate and recover energy before continuing to Ollantaytambo and Pisac.
Vegetarian feeding requests are usually easy to coordinate; other requirements may need prior confirmation.
Ollantaytambo
After lunch we will continue to Ollantaytambo, approximately 94 kilometers from Cusco.
This archaeological site had religious, agricultural, administrative and defensive functions. Among its best known elements are the terraces, the stone enclosures and the upper sector where you can see a wall composed of large blocks. (COSITUC – BTC CUSCO TOUR TICKET)
The hike begins near the square and ascends by stone bleachers. The effort is short, but constant. Some people may feel tired on the legs or shortness of breath, especially after lunch.
It is not mandatory to go up quickly. The guide will pause to explain the sectors and allow the group to reorganize.
From the terraces you can see the village, the valley and the mountains that surround Ollantaytambo. On the slopes, deposits and structures built in high sectors can also be distinguished.
After the archaeological tour, the group will be able to observe part of the urban layout of the village, with narrow streets, stone walls and water channels.
Travel to Pisac
At the end of the visit we will continue through the valley following the route to Pisac.
This section allows you to observe the Vilcanota River, agricultural land and towns located between mountains. The trip can feel long due to the number of places traveled during the day.
The guide will take advantage of part of the transfer to explain the organization of the Sacred Valley and announce the indications for the last visit.
Pisac Archaeological Park
The last main stop will be the Pisac Archaeological Park, located approximately 33 kilometers from Cusco.
The whole consists of agricultural, urban and religious sectors. It also has a large funerary area built in the mountain. (COSITUC – BTC CUSCO TOUR TICKET)
Depending on the schedule, transit and access conditions, the route can be concentrated in the viewpoints and sectors that are viable within the programming.
From the top you can see the way the terraces cover the slopes and adapt to the relief. Old deposits or qolas, roads and enclosures distributed on different levels can also be recognized.
The ground features stone, earth and unevenness. At the end of the day, fatigue may feel more than in the morning, so it is advisable to walk carefully.
Pisac Market
When time and operation allow, we will make a stop at the Pisac market.
Here you can find textiles, ceramics, jewelry, wood products, alpaca items and other souvenirs.
The purchase is optional. We recommend checking the products, asking the price before paying and carrying money on suns for small purchases.
The visit to the market can be reduced or eliminated when there is delay in the road, high congestion or closure of the archaeological parks.
Return to Cusco
After Pisac we will start the return to Cusco.
The arrival is scheduled around 7:00 p.m. The tour will end approximately one block from the Plaza de Armas.
The schedule can change by transit, weather conditions, time spent by the group, festivities, road controls or operational modifications.
