Live Inca Engineering, Quechua communities and high Andean lagoons south of Cusco

Before dawn in Cusco, you will travel to an area where tradition does not remain locked in a museum. In Quehue, four Quechua communities renew each year a suspension bridge made with plant fibres, applying knowledge transmitted between generations.

Q’eswachaka crosses a gorge of the Apurímac River and retains a technique that formerly allowed to join paths over deep Andean canyons. Its value lies not only in the structure: the annual renewal strengthens cooperation between the communities of Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Choccayhua and Ccollana Quehue. In 2013, this knowledge, techniques and rituals were inscribed on the Representative List of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The tour also passes through rural landscapes of Canas, the Yanaoca sector, local geological formations and the circuit of the Four Lagoons.

With Peceros Agency Travel, you will have transport, bilingual guide, tickets, breakfast, lunch and assistance during a day away from the busiest routes in Cusco.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Pick up at the hotel and depart from Cusco

Highlights: early tour to the valleys and towns of southern Cusco.

The pickup is between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. from hotels located within the operating area of Cusco.

Cusco has narrow, steep and vehicle-restricted streets. When the minivan cannot reach the hotel door, a nearby point will be coordinated.

After we gather the group, we will begin the journey south. During the first hours you can rest inside the vehicle.

The road combines paved road and, later, rural roads. It is advisable to wear a warm clothing by hand because the temperature is low during the early morning.

Bridge crossing

When access is permitted, passengers may cross according to local instructions.

The bridge moves with the weight, wind and passage of people. This sensation can produce nerves, especially when looking at the river and the walls of the canyon.

It is not mandatory to cross it. Anyone who prefers to stay at one end will be able to observe the structure from the mainland.

During the crossing:

  • Move slowly.
  • Keep both hands available.
  • Respect the indicated distance.
  • Don’t jump.
  • Don’t run.
  • Don’t shake the ropes.

The crossing may be suspended for maintenance, rain, wind, temporary deterioration or community decision.

Observation of the Canyon

You will have time to contemplate the Apurímac River and take photographs from the authorized sectors.

The banks have strong slopes and uneven surfaces. Don’t cross barriers or approach unstable edges.

the place does not have the same infrastructure as an urban archaeological complex. Bathrooms, shops and rest areas can be basic.

Technical Details

  • Transportation: shared or private tourist vehicle.
  • Output Altitude: approximately 3,399 meters.
