Tipon, Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas Church

While much of the travelers are heading towards the busiest routes in Cusco, south of the city there is a quieter tour that brings together Inca engineering, Wari urbanism, religious art and traditional villages in a single day.

The Tour to the South Valley of Cusco is designed for those who want to take advantage of the morning without long walks. In a few hours you can observe the water moving through the stone channels of Tipón, walk between the adobe structures of Pikillacta and enter the Church of Andahuaylillas, whose interior keeps murals, canvases, altars and golden finishes.

The route is advancing through rural areas where you still see crop fields, small communities and family restaurants. Sometimes the weather changes between stops and another, but the vehicle stays close for most of the route.

With Peceros Agency Travel you will have tourist transport, professional accompaniment and a clear schedule from the pick-up at your hotel until the return to Cusco.

  • Type of activity: Archaeological, architectural and rural tour
  • Walks: Short, with frequent pauses

Itinerary

DAY 1

Cusco – Tipón – Pikillacta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco

Highlight of the day: Inca Channels in operation, urban planning Wari and religious art within a quiet route south of Cusco.

Pick up at the hotel and departure from Cusco

Between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., the staff at Peceros Agency Travel will pass through your hotel to start the tour.

The exit is made by tourist transport by the road that connects Cusco with the towns of the southern valley. During the journey you can see peripheral neighborhoods, fields, mountains and small towns.

The morning may feel cold, especially during the dry months. It is advisable to wear a light jacket that you can save when the temperature rises.

Tipon

The first stop will be the Archaeological Park of Tipón, located approximately 24 or 25 kilometers southeast of Cusco.

The complex consists of terraces, canals, fountains, enclosures and structures linked to the ceremonial and productive management of water. Tipón is considered one of the main examples of Inca hydraulic engineering and maintains sectors where water still circulates continuously. The site is included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket.

The hike is done by stone and earth trails. There are some steps and short slopes, but this is not a demanding hike. The constant sound of the water and the staggered distribution of the terraces make this stop especially pleasant during the morning.

The guide will explain the functioning of the canals, the distribution of the enclosures and the interpretations related to the administrative, agricultural and ceremonial use of the place.

Pikillacta

Then we will continue by vehicle to Pikillacta, one of the main Wari settlements in the Cusco region.

Unlike the Inca centers built mainly with stone, here predominate the walls of adobe and stone originally clad in mud. Its layout shows straight streets, clustered enclosures and areas that were part of an organized urban planning.

Walking through Pikillacta allows you to notice the scale of the settlement. Some sectors are open and exposed to wind and sun, so it will be helpful to keep your hat on and drink water.

Near the complex is Rumicolca, a stone structure related to the control of traffic on the ancient route to the Collao. The stop may be made when the time, transit and operating conditions allow it.

Andahuaylillas

The tour continues to the Andahuaylillas district, where the Church of San Pedro Apóstol is located.

Its exterior facade is relatively sober. Upon entering, the visual change is immediate: the space contains mural paintings, canvases, carvings, altars and decorative elements linked to the religious art developed during the colonial period.

The guide’s explanation helps to recognize details that could go unnoticed, such as the composition of the murals, the function of the altarpieces, and the way European and Andean symbols were incorporated.

Within the church, the indications related to photographs, circulation and conservation must be respected. These rules may vary by temple administration.

Optional stop in Saylla

During the return we will pass through Saylla, a town known for the preparation of pork chicharrón.

The stop will depend on the time available and the coordination of the group. Consumption is optional and is not included in the tour price.

this stop can slightly lengthen the return, but it also allows you to try a local preparation in a family establishment before returning to the city.

Return to Cusco

After completing the stops, we will start the return trip in the same tourist vehicle.

The arrival in Cusco is scheduled at approximately 3:00 p.m. The schedule may vary by transit, road conditions, time spent on each site or group needs.
