Pick up from your accommodation
The Peceros Agency Travel team will pick you up between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
The exact schedule will depend on the location of your hotel, vehicle access and pick-up order. Accommodations located on steep, narrow, pedestrian streets may require a close meeting point.
You must be prepared at reception at least ten minutes before the confirmed schedule.
The morning in Cusco is usually cold. Keep your jacket, hat and gloves handy, as the main luggage will remain on the back of the vehicle.

Travel from Cusco to Mollepata
We will leave Cusco towards the province of Anta.
During the first few hours, most travelers rest inside the vehicle. As it dawns, valleys, agricultural fields, small villages and mountains begin to be observed.
The journey to Mollepata takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, although it can vary by traffic, road condition, weather or additional collections.
The road has curves. People prone to dizziness should bring the medication recommended by their doctor and notify the guide if they need to sit in a certain area of the vehicle.
Breakfast in Mollepata
Upon arrival in Mollepata we will enter Casa Salkantay or the restaurant confirmed for departure.
Breakfast can include:
- Hot drink.
- Butter or jam.
The exact composition depends on the restaurant.
We do not recommend overeating. A very heavy breakfast, combined with curves, altitude and effort, can cause nausea during the ascent.
Transfer to Soraypampa
After breakfast we will continue by vehicle on a mountain road.
The original itinerary mentions Challacancha as a point prior to the walk. In the current operation, most day trips continue to Soraypampa or to the enabled parking lot closest to the trail. The exact point can be changed for maintenance, weather, local decisions or safety conditions.
The road ascends through the territory of Mollepata and crosses rural sectors. In the upper part appear grasslands, slashes, mountains and scattered dwellings.
The path may present:
- Curves pronounced.
- Powder during the dry season.
- Mud during the rainy season.
- Water crossings.
- Strait tight.
In January 2025, INDECI reported sliding damage on a neighborhood road linked to the route to Humantay and Salkantay, demonstrating that accesses may be affected during the rainy season. (Indeci)
Arrival to the walking area
Upon arrival at the starting point, the guide will organize the group and explain the conditions of the route.
Before you start, you should:
- Adjust your shoes well.
- Apply sunscreen.
- Bring water and snacks.
- Dress up in layers.
- Prepare the raincoat.
- Adjust the cane.
Basic hygienic services, stalls and villagers offering horse rentals can be found in the access. Availability and conditions depend on the day.
Start of the walk
The hike begins on a dirt and stone road.
The first few meters allow the body to adapt to the effort. However, the slope increases progressively and the air feels lighter as altitude is gained.
On the sides appear grasslands of puna, small streams of water and mountains. In some sectors you can see horses, mules, cows and birds of height.
The trail is shared with other travelers and animals. Keep a distance when a horse passes and stay on the safe side of the road.
Don’t try to walk to the rhythm of faster people. In height, moving slowly and maintaining stable breathing is usually more effective.
Ascent on the main slope
The middle and final part concentrates the greatest effort.
The path becomes more inclined and sectors can appear with loose stones, mud or natural steps. Breathing speeds up and the legs begin to feel the slope.
The guide will take short breaks to gather the group and review the status of the passengers.
Some mild altitude symptoms may be:
- Accelerated breathing.
- Light dizziness.
- Lack of appetite.
You must communicate any symptoms. Hiding discomfort to continue can increase the risk.
Optional Horse Use
Horses are offered by local settlers and can cover part of the ascent or descent.
They are not included in the tour price.
Conditions of horse service
- It is paid directly in cash.
- The rate depends on the tranche and demand.
- Availability is not guaranteed.
- It usually does not reach the edge of the lagoon.
- The final stretch may require walking.
- The passenger must follow the instructions of the arriero.
Hiring a horse does not completely eliminate exposure to altitude.
Peceros Agency Travel can help with coordination, but agreement and payment are made with the local provider.
Arrival at the Humantay Lagoon
After the ascent you will reach the authorized area in front of the Humantay Lagoon.
The lagoon is located under the snowy name and is part of the mountain landscape of Mollepata. Official sources locate it within the province of Anta and recognize its importance as one of the main tourist attractions of the district.
The color of the water depends on factors such as:
- Solar light.
- Mineral sediments.
You should not expect the lagoon to always have the same tone that appears in edited photographs. On cloudy days it may look darker; with sun you can take on turquoise or blue-green shades.
The cold increases by staying still. After walking, the clothes may be moist in the sweat, so it is advisable to put on a dry layer or a jacket before cooling.
Ceremony to the Pachamama
When conditions, time and space allow, the guide will be able to turn a brief moment of thanks to the Pachamama.
This activity must be carried out with respect and without presenting it as a spectacle.
Participation is voluntary. You should not leave plastic, processed food, coins or waste in the area.
We also avoid building new stone apachets, since removing stones from the ground and accumulating them can alter the environment.
Time for photographs
You will have time to take photographs from the authorized sectors.
To get better results:
- Clean the lens before shooting.
- Protects the chamber from rain and moisture.
- Keep batteries close to the body when it’s cold.
- Don’t approach unstable edges.
- Do not enter closed areas.
- Avoid blocking the step.
The batteries can be discharged more quickly due to the cold.
Real weather conditions
The weather can change in a few minutes.
It is possible to find:
- Intense sun.
- Strong wind.
The route has since 2025 a municipal regulation of use and safety of the tourist trail to the lagoon, which confirms the importance of respecting the controls and operational indications.
The guide can reduce permanence or indicate immediate decline when there is risk.
Start of the descent
After the visit we will return on the same path.
Descent requires less breathing effort, but it may feel stronger in the knees. The loose earth, stone or mud sectors increase the risk of slipping.
Use the cane and avoid running.
When horses approach:
- Stop in a safe place.
- Stay on the inner side of the trail.
- Follow the directions of the gunner.
- Don’t make sudden movements.
- Don’t walk right behind the animal.
Return to parking
When you arrive at the starting point you will have a short time to rest, use the available services and organize your belongings.
The guide will check that the entire group has returned before boarding the vehicle.
Check that you carry:
Return to Mollepata
We will board the vehicle to descend again to Mollepata.
The path may feel moved due to curves and fatigue. Wear a belt and avoid standing.
During the rainy season, the driver can slow down by mud, fog or stones on the road.
Buffet lunch
In Mollepata the buffet lunch will be served.
The menu may include:
The variety depends on the restaurant assigned.
Bottled beverages, beer, and other special consumptions may have additional cost.
After the walk, some people feel little appetite. Even so, it is advisable to consume a moderate serving and stay hydrated.
Return to Cusco
After lunch we will start the return journey.
